Basically, there are two types of aquarium plants; the plastic aquarium plants and "real" or live aquarium plants. Plastic aquarium plants needs little maintenance while live aquarium plants require more maintenance.
If you opt for live aquarium plants, there are several important things that you must know. The first thing that you must know is that live aquarium plants need carbon dioxide in order to survive. Carbon dioxide is mostly produced by the waste materials of the aquarium such as fish wastes, leftovers and the effects of bacterial processes. However, most of the mentioned source of carbon dioxide is not adequate enough to keep the live aquarium plants healthy. Most fish tank owners use a device that adds carbon dioxide in to the aquarium. These types of devices will provide continuous supply of carbon dioxide for your live aquarium plants.
Other than carbon dioxide, plants also need sufficient amount of light. Plants need light for its photosynthesis process (converting light into chemical energy). The said process is vital for the growth of the live aquatic plants. Most of the aquarium owners use a device that does not only provide carbon dioxide but also provides light source.
In addition to the ones mentioned, live aquatic plants require a decent substrate. For those who do not know what a substrate is, substrates refers to the materials on the bottom of the aquarium such as the gravel, shell grits, crushed corals, coral sand and the likes. The substrate of your aquarium must allow the roots of the live aquarium plants to set securely. Substrates also provide nourishments for the plants. However, make sure that the substrate must not affect the quality of the water of your aquarium.
Live aquarium plants provide more appeal to the already relaxing comfort and pleasant viewing experience that the aquariums provide.
