Having roots from Canis Lupus (or the Gray Wolf), it's of no surprise if dogs do display acts of violence, whatever the degree, whatever the breed. Due to the number of crossbreeding practices bent on ironing out this predatorial instinct, most breed of dogs, domesticated dogs have all but accepted humans as part of the pack, or at least superior breed of canines.

But there are purposes for dogs to be aggressive, such as when used as guard dogs or attack dogs.

A guard dog is usually from breeds that have strong tendency to bark. These dogs should be territorial, devoted, and big if not -very noisy, but not necessarily attack dogs. Mastiffs belong to this category. Like a Saint Bernard, whose massive size and deep throaty bark are deterrent enough against most trespassers. Properly trained for guard duties, mastiffs can be excellent watchdogs. The absence of which will make them ultra friendly even if they do bark.

There are times when you need both a barking dog and an attack dog; like for instance when you live in a spacious estate where trespassers will only be: trespassers or crooks. And don't expect crooks to be lesser informed, they'd know guard dogs and attack dogs. To silence a mastiff all you need to do is approach and try to be friendly. It would only cost packet of dog biscuits and a pat and this dog breed will happily scamper away. There are other breeds of dogs that only attack when they perceive a danger against their masters but not against the property, like pit bulls. And that would include mailmen and milk delivery service.

Attack dogs are needed when you need to protect your personal safety without using firearms. For that purpose, territorial dogs are hardly needed. Attack dogs require the highest form of obedience training: when to stand ground, when to bark, when to attack and when to release. For that reason, highly independent dog breeds are improbable, just like pit bull and pit bull terriers, whose aggression might be redirected wrongly coupled with a streak for stubbornness.

Temperament is also a balancing factor for attack dogs. Because for all its worth, you could never train a gentle St. Bernard as bad ass attack dog, he might as well move over and meekly curl by anyone's feet. Rottweilers, German shepherd, Doberman, and bulldogs are great attack dogs breed easily trained and full of fieriness.

All these say too, that when you have the need for attack dogs, always keep in mind that it needs responsible ownership. Ever since the several accounts of pit bull terrier attacks due to irresponsible handling of owners, the breed was unfairly banned and destroyed.
