All about Malamute Dogs

Being an underdog to a better known cousin, malamutes are considered lesser extravagance against the Siberian husky. But the difference between malamutes and husky are nil to nonexistent.

One obvious difference is body structure. At a glance, Siberian huskies love to run, and they are streamlined for speed. Malamutes also love open spaces but their activity level is more inclined for freighting. Malamute dogs are made for strength, thus they have a higher density bone structure and bigger frame. That makes them superior dogs for endurance dogsled racing spanning vast distances.

In the past, malamutes are among the first breed of dogs that have successfully cohabitated with humans. Though there were several theories behind their existence, the best theory was that they were acquired and raised while wolf pups, when the mother wolf was killed by hunters. Gradually, these wolves became part of nomadic communities, sticking to its once captors and creating a bond that lasted to this day, streamlining the breed to what we know now as malamutes.

In the past, malamute dogs were naturally work dogs, and among its primary function was freighting if not aiding its human masters on the hunt. And today, with the presence of sled machines, its use as a utility dog had vanquished, leaving malamute dogs exclusively as family dogs. And given to its high gregariousness to anyone human (due to the adaptation from the past), poor receptor to training due to direct feral lineage, it makes malamutes highly sociable dogs but poor guard dogs.

Malamute dogs are some of those breed of dogs that's more undomesticated because they are very hard to train, given to its close relation to wolves resulting to a high independence streak. Malamute dogs tend to exhibit brash attitude, wile and cunning when it comes to mischief, and a very affectionate temperament. It won't stay put usually and will find ways to escape a yard, often by digging.

Its genuine affectionate temperament makes malamute dogs very charming pets. Of most dogs, they are the breed that gets very excited upon seeing a family member arrive, especially if this member is close to the dog. They will run around, bark, and jump, a characteristic that often gets them endeared so much to their owners.

The aggression level of malamute dogs to humans are usually nil to nonexistent, but their aggression to other dogs can be high, due to the fact that they are pack oriented animals. And because of the wolf lineage, they possess a strong prey drive, often attacking smaller ‘prey' animals like cats, fowls, and rabbits.

Due to their tolerant temperament and endearing properties, malamutes are suitable for animal companionship. Gladly they will accompany any owner to trips or jogs or walks, enjoying any kind of pace without frequent leash restraining.
