All about Terrier Dogs

Among the most widespread dog breed in the United States next to Labradors are terrier dogs. As consequence of the numerous crossbreeding practices in the past they have the widest medley of breed than other dogs. And consequently too, terrier dogs are among the most adaptable dogs, whose function is also the widest: from hunting dogs to working dogs, from show dogs to toy dogs and more popularly as a family pet.

Terrier dogs originally are countryside breed of dogs, their adaptation strongly inclined as hunter dogs of rural communities. In effect, they are very devoted to humans and as eager to please, and would be friendly even to human strangers. This fact makes them somewhat poor as guard dog, though they can be territorial which can be usefully trained as barking watchdogs. Due to their adaptation as watch dogs, some terrier dogs have strong vermin impulse, and would eagerly go after beavers, raccoons, squirrels and foxes. And due to crossbreeding with bulldogs, some terrier dogs breed have strong tendencies to fight, but their aggression to other dogs aren't carried over to their human masters.

Terrier dogs indeed have the widest assortment of breed, ranging from all sorts of functions. The most common breed of terrier dogs are as follows:

Having earned the sobriquet as the "American Gentleman", Boston terriers carry semblance of dignity through their pose: short noses in the air and standard (AKC recognized) coats of black, white or brindle having proportional and symmetrical designs. This coat, resembling formal attire, strongly alluded to the sobriquet.

Though sometimes irritable, Boston terriers are gentle, expressive and devoted. Properly trained, they can get along with children, other canines and non canines well.

Irish Terrier
Irish terriers are best described as a typical dog: full of energy, tolerant to human handling to a degree, territorial to a degree, and intelligent, though its being willfulness can be a problem to trainers. Irish terriers isn't particularly strong in a specific area, thus doesn't have specific characteristics. What sets them different is their rough, coarse and harsh coat, which may be attractive to some.

Yorkshire Terrier
Nicknamed fondly as Yorkies, Yorkshire terriers are toy dogs, roughly weighing around 5 – 7 lbs. they have long silky coat, which is one of their attractive characteristic as a toy dog. Like most terriers, they aren't the type of dog that is eager to please due but can get affectionate. Terrier dogs, Yorkies not as exception, have instinctive hunting and fiery nature and would eagerly go after rodents, cats, and even larger dogs. And due to their diminutive stature, they are the ones that get hurt.

Another terrier breed that has gotten quite an infamy is the pit bull terrier. Through crossbreeding with pit bulls, the pit bull terrier is a strong combination of resiliency and fierceness. And due to the pit bull lineage, it is as eager to attack anything that it sees threat to its master, and that could be anyone giving a flyer.
