Reasons To Consider Breeding Your Bitch

There are a number of reasons why potential breeders may be considering breeding their bitch. While many of these reasons are certainly valid, this is sometimes not enough to justify the breeding of a particular bitch. This is often the case when the bitch has a particular health concern which should preclude her from being bred. This article will discuss some of the reasons to consider breeding a bitch. It will include worthwhile reasons for breeding a bitch as well as reasons which are not worthwhile.

One of the most common reasons why new breeders decide to breed a particular bitch relates to the look and temperament of the dog. The owner thinks the bitch is really pretty and is a great companion dog. These are certainly both nice attributes for the bitch to have but neither of them, when considered alone, is a strong enough reason to breed a bitch. A great coat with cute markings may be attractive to some but if the bitch is poorly structured with joint problems and progressive retinal atrophy the bitch should not be bred. In fact a bitch with these types of health concerns should be spayed immediately to avoid accidental breedings which may adversely impact future litters of puppies.

Another reason an owner of a bitch may want to consider breeding is the bitch has excelled in the show ring or as a working dog. Bitches that excel in the show ring are likely structurally sound and excellent representations of the breed. Bitches of this type of quality, as long as they are certified free of health concerns, will be excellent additions to any breeding program. Likewise bitches that excel as working dogs in activities such as herding or hunting may also be good candidates for breeding. However, again it is extremely important to ensure the bitches are cleared of major health concerns before breeding.

Still other potential breeders may consider breeding a bitch for profit. It is possible to profit from breeding a bitch but this is not always the case. It is extremely important to understand there are a number of costs associated with breeding a bitch which can make it difficult to profit. Unlike owners of stud dogs who collect fees for the services provided by their dogs without incurring many, if any, expenses, the owners of bitches can incur a number of fees during the breeding process. These fees may include, but are not limited to, stud dog fees, health certifications, pre-natal care and costs associated with the care and feeding of the puppies. Any complications that arise during the pregnancy or delivery will result in additional expenses if veterinary intervention is required.

Finally, some breeders wish to breed their bitch for the purpose of allowing her to experience being a mother. Although at face value this may seem like a valid reason to consider breeding a bitch, it is important to remember there is no way to confirm a bitch is interested in experiencing the joys of motherhood. Certainly most bitches will instinctively know how to care for, nurture and feed newborn puppies, this does not mean it is something the bitch wants. Consider the physical and mental stress the pregnancy and delivery will require of the bitch and determine whether or not this is worthwhile.
