Green Algae and other Saltwater Aquarium Plants

There are different forms of algae that can be found in different bodies of water and even on land. The green, red and brown algae have been considered as marine plants because of their plant-like characteristics despite their simple qualities. Although some of these species belong to kingdom Protista, some species have scientifically been considered part of the plant kingdom. The green and red algae have still been regarded as part of the plant kingdom while other species of the green algae belong to kingdom Protista and are protozoans.

Plant-like algae are the popular additions to the saltwater aquarium making them among the common saltwater aquarium plants. There are different variations of these aquatic organisms. They vary in colors, shapes and sizes.

The green and red algae plants are saltwater aquarium plants that cannot only enhance beauty to the marine aquarium environment; they can also bring benefits to the manmade aquatic habitat and its inhabitants.

Red and green algae plants can remove excess nitrates, phosphates and ammonia which can bring harm to other aquarium inhabitants particularly the fishes. They can help in removing the heavy metal and can neutralize toxins in the aquarium water. The saltwater aquarium plants can also produce chemicals and pH buffer which could protect to the external and some internal organs of the aquarium fish.

Some species of saltwater aquarium plants can be used as food sources for the inhabitants. Some aqua faunas feed the red and green algae. Green macroalgae such as bag of Caulerpa and Halimeda plant are other varieties of saltwater aquarium plants suitable for aquarium environment. Some species of fish feed on these plants.

There are other species of saltwater aquarium plants that can not be consumed by aquatic faunas in the aquarium. Maiden's hair plant and painter's brush plants have that attribute. Their appearances can make these species preferable additions in an aquarium. They can serve as breeding grounds for amphipods and other aquatic creatures that can be placed in aquaria.

Having saltwater aquarium plants for the aquarium can require costs. The prices of these plants can range depending on the species and size. They can be found in aquarium shops and even on online shops. Some varieties of these are cultured.

Saltwater aquarium plants are great additions to marine aquarium. They can enhance the appearance of the aquarium. Having the plants can bring advantages to the fish and to the aquarists.
